We welcomed from the United States Paula Kim, a highly renowned patient advocate with extensive experience of patient-centered policymaking, launching and running patient groups, representing patient perspectives as a committee member of various national institutions, and fostering patient advocates both at home and abroad. Ms. Kim spoke on the theme of “Corporate Contributions to Patient-Centered Activity”.
As is widely known, patient-focused activity in Japan is still very much in the developmental stage when compared to the situation in the United States and Europe, and most patient groups have yet to attain organizational maturity or stable and effective management. However, as is seen in the field of cancer control, there is a clear and pressing need in Japan for patients to play a role alongside legislators, administrators, and healthcare providers as key stakeholders in shaping health policy. We discussed ideas and proposals from the United States for strengthening patient activity in Japan and how private enterprises could support this process.
