According to the World Health Organization, the three major infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, cause nearly 3.25 million deaths each year around the world, and, when combined with neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), it is estimated that over 1 billion people globally are affected by some type of infectious disease. In particular, improving R&D, access, cost, and quality of pharmaceuticals and medical technologies in developing countries is a matter of great urgency. However, with sluggish provision of official development assistance from the governments of developed countries, there is now a growing movement for the private sector to work with governments and other global partners to create new funding sources and promote solutions to global health problems.
New mechanisms for cooperation that go beyond existing frameworks are necessary to accomplish sustainable resolutions to recurring and forthcoming global health issues. At this Breakfast Meeting, two innovative examples were explored. UNITAID’s Dr. Broun shared with the audience the way UNITAID supports the development of markets for pharmaceuticals and medical technologies in developing countries through its groundbreaking model that places a $1 levy on international flights that operate out of partner countries. The GHIT Fund’s Dr. Slingsby followed by speaking on the GHIT Fund’s unique partnership that has brought together the Japanese government, five Japanese pharmaceutical companies, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to drive R&D for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases and NTDs that persist in developing countries.
