(Report) Seminar “Solution for Global Health Issues -Public and Private Partnership-“

In recent years, there has been rapid economic growth in some developing countries which is seen as a new market opportunity for businesses, however, these
countries are disadvantaged by their limited access to medical resources. In particular they are significantly handicapped by the three major infectious
diseases i.e. HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and NTD (Neglected Tropical Diseases).
As public funding is limited, an innovative business model called “Public-Private-Partnership”(PPP) plays an important role in solving global health issues
in developing countries. PPP is a government service or private business venture which is funded and operated through a partnership of government and one or
more private sector companies.
In the first session of the current sequential seminars, we would like to hold discussion about why PPP has drawn great attention especially in the global
health field. By introducing examples of PPP by The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund,) which aims to solve global health issues, we
discussed how government and private sector companies can cooperate and maximize the partnership. The GHIT Fund is a non-profit organization aimed at
promoting the discovery and development of new health technologies including drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for infectious diseases prevalent in developing
counties.The first partnership of its kind in Japan, the GHIT Fund is a PPP established by the Government of Japan, a consortium of Japanese pharmaceutical
companies and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2012. Through the session, we discussed and explored sustainable ways of contributing to global health
solutions with speakers and audience participation.

Global Health Innovative Technology Fund
The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund) is Japan’s first public-private partnership to advance the development of new health technologies
for the developing world.
The first product development fund of its kind in Japan, the GHIT Fund was created by the Japanese Government, Japan’s leading pharmaceutical companies, and
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The GHIT Fund is bringing Japanese leadership in health and technology innovation from its public and private sectors to the global fight against infectious
diseases. The goals is to facilitate and fund
global health R&D partnerships that can generate new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics and other tools for fighting neglected diseases prevalent in developing
world.
