The First Meeting of the Parliamentary Caucus on Strategies to Address Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
date : 5/15/2014
On April 18, 2014, the Parliamentary Caucus on strategies to address chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) held its first meeting with Dr. Ichiro Kamoshita as the Chairman. The approximately 60 participants included diet members, representatives of patient groups, and academics. As a result of the meeting, members agreed to hold seminars and to work to increase public awareness. Budget allocations and legislation to support these activities are also expected.
The Parliamentary Caucus on strategies to address COPD was established as a forum to discuss policies related to COPD with internal and external stakeholders after HGPI’s November 2013 non-partisan congressional briefing held in cooperation with The Japanese Respiratory Society and the respiratory patient advocacy non-profit, J-BREATH. At the November meeting, COPD was framed as one of the major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and discussions centered on a recent HGPI survey of the economic effects of COPD took place.
