There are three years remaining until the end of the time period set for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The health related goals (MDG4: Reduce child mortality rate, MDG5: Improve maternal health, and MDG6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases) have particularly lagged in their progress, and so more effective approaches are being called for worldwide in the area of global health.
With Japan’s public debt exceeding 200% of its GDP, and in the midst of worsening fiscal conditions, it is unlikely that we can expect to see significant increases in ODA contributions. Within these difficult conditions, however, one of the things that has increased the sense of there being light at the end of the tunnel are the undertakings being made by Japanese businesses in the area of global health.
In this report, five case examples of corporate activities in global health are presented, through each of which key issues are identified, and a summary of recommendations made.
